Give ‘Em a Call!
I recently finished the fourth book written by a guy named Harry Beckwith. If you couldn’t surmise on your own, I will tell you that I enjoy this man’s writing style and easily “connect” with his messages.
His four books include: Selling The Invisible; What Customers Love; The Invisible Touch; and You, Inc. They are all good, easy-to-read and are written around short, message-bearing vignettes with a bold, one sentence sum-up message at the conclusion of each story.
On the last page of book four titled “You, Inc” an invitation to join his newsletter list was included so I decided to sign up for some more input. I went one step further. I emailed the author a brief note which led to a series of emails between the two of us.
Here are my/his exact words:
I have enjoyed all four of your books. You, Inc. was a real beauty. Looking forward to more.

The biggest accolade I receive is when I am told “You practice what you preach.” It is apparent that you do as well. Good for you Harry.
Of course you can use my quote but you might want some more meat. It will be easy to write. I enjoy your style as well as your words. I guess the older us fossils get, the more we appreciate how simple things are. Your nuggets are right on the money and they stimulate a very positive thought process.
I didn’t just enjoy reading your book … I loved reading your books. You have a gift my man and I probably will be buying a number of your latest work to send out as presents.
Not that the others don’t warrant the same behavior, but You, Inc seems to fit young and old, sales and non alike.

The reason I am sharing this with you today is to show you first hand how things work in the real world today. Let me clarify … how sometimes things work. This little banter isn’t much, but it has broken the ice and opened the door for future dialogue. And that is all you want to do … crack a few doors for future possibilities.
The strategy here, if there was one, featured sincere applause and appreciation directed toward an unsuspecting target. Then the dominoes will fall where they will.
Why not adopt my tactics for yourself. Write to people you want to meet with, talk to, share ideas with or offer recommendations to. You are witness in today’s Marketing Minute that these “dumb ideas” do work.
Get out there and make them work for you.
